It is seen as one of the main species that participated in the subsequent extensive process of hybridization with roses from the European/Mediterranean/Middle-Eastern (mostly tetraploid) sections ( Supplementary Notes 1). ![]() The Chinese rose Rosa chinensis (diploid) was introduced to Europe in the 18 th century. Only 8 to 20 rose species are said to have contributed to the present complex hybrid rose cultivars, namely Rosa x hybrida 2. Roses have undergone extensive reticulate evolution with interspecific hybridization, introgression and polyploidization. The genus Rosa contains about 200 species, more than half being polyploid 1. ![]() Ornamental features as well as therapeutic and cosmetic values have certainly motivated rose domestication. They have been cultivated by humans since antiquity, e.g. Roses are among the most commonly cultivated ornamental plants worldwide. This genome provides a foundation for understanding the mechanisms governing rose traits and will accelerate improvement in roses, Rosaceae and ornamentals. Reconstructing regulatory and secondary metabolism pathways allowed us to propose a model of interconnected regulation of scent and flower color. Genomic segments of Chinese ancestry revealed new candidate genes for recurrent blooming. Diversity analyses highlighted the mosaic origin of ‘La France’, one of the first hybrids combining the growth vigor of European species and recurrent blooming of Chinese species. Using Single Molecule Real-Time sequencing and a meta-assembly approach we obtained one of the most complete plant genomes to date. We generated a homozygous genotype from a heterozygous diploid modern roses progenitor, Rosa chinensis ‘Old Blush’. We report the rose whole genome sequencing and assembly and resequencing of major genotypes that contributed to rose domestication. Roses hold high cultural and economic importance as ornamentals and for the perfume industry. ![]()
